Tod, John Grant Papers 1833-1872

John Grant Tod (1808–1877) was a naval officer and one of the founders of the firstrailroad in Texas. The papers include letters, a diary, legal documents, anda broadside concerning Tod’s career as an officer in the Texas Navy and the U.S.Navy, as a land buyer, and as a founder of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and ColoradoRailroad.

John Grant Tod was born November 14, 1808. He served in the Mexican navy and United States Navy before joining the Texas Navy in 1837. In 1842 Tod resigned and moved to Washington where he lobbied for the Republic of Texas. In 1851 Tod served as a delegate to the London Industrial Exhibition. Born and educated in Kentucky, John Hunter Herndon arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1838. He studied law in Kentucky and Houston, and was admitted to the bar in Fort Bend County in November 1838. Reuben M. Potter was born in New Jersey in 1802. From 1827 to 1833 he was an agent of a commercial house in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, after which he served as the customs comptroller at Galveston, Texas. In December 1846 Potter became secretary to Maj. Gen. Thomas S. Jessup, quartermaster general of the United States Army. He was made a prisoner of war in San Antonio during the Civil War.
